The Endgame: Self-Actualization | Developing Self Confidence Part 3

Self-actualization is the topic of this final article in the series.

Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

--Nelson Mandela, 1994 South African Presidential Inaugural Speech, quoting spiritual leader Marianne Williamson of the Church of Today in Detroit.

To continue along the lines of the discussion on self confidence let's turn to self-actualization.

This quote by Marianne Williamson synthesizes the ideas I've been talking about. Self-actualization is the manifestation of a life based on spiritual self confidence.

Notice how the quote talks about liberation from fear and how our presence liberates others. What a wonderful way to live. Imagine being so confident that your very presence as you enter a room inspires others.

Isn't it just as egotistical to think that we are small and undeserving as it is to think ourselves superior to someone else? So realization of your connection to Source is the key to the confidence you are looking for. Because in connection to Source we realize that we are just as important as (and no more important than) anyone else.

Being just right is being self actualized.

Throughout this web site I offer various suggestions that can lead to self-actualization by improving your experience in relationships, with money, with work, and other assorted life situations.

Sometimes people who have low self-esteem act pushy or arrogant to make up for it. So don't be fooled if you come across someone who seems as if he's full of himself, confusing that with self-esteem. People with high self-esteem, who are self-actualized, treat people with caring, with generosity, with love. Remember the prayer of St. Francis?

This self-actualization article is the final article in this series on developing self confidence. But I've only talked about enough to get you started.

Self-actualization is an ongoing process. No one ever gets to that place in which everything is perfect, no one ever gets mad or out of balance. So don't hold your breath.

Rather, think of self-actualization as a tool on the spiritual journey. It is

a key that can open doors;

a shield that protects against harm;

a map directly to the Holy Grail;

... and so much more!

While I certainly am no spiritual giant, I feel I've achieved a certain level of mental/emotional comfort in my life. I'm very fortunate that I feel confident in most situations. And now, looking back over the past 20 or so years, I don't feel that giving to others or looking out for others' interests is a hardship. In fact, I feel that I am growing closer to being myself, my True Self in this journey.

I hope that you, too, can tap into the power that comes with confidence. If you get excited about it, as I do, perhaps we will meet each other on the self-actualization path!
