Based on emails I've gotten recently I see that a series on how to build self confidence might be helpful. So over the next few days or so I will write about using spirituality to build self confidence, and how you can go from low self esteem to feeling good about yourself, in any situation.
Remember, a principle is a formula, a recipe. If you know how to apply a principle in one situation, you can learn more easily to apply it in another, even a different situation. Because it can be applied across many circumstances, it has the qualities of truth, and truth is what makes a principle. It is a building block.
For example, 2+2=4 is a building block of arithmetic. For arithmetic, that formula is a principle. It is always true.
Gravity is another example. It is a scientific principle. It is true (in most cases, unless you are in space) but certain sciences (like quantum physics) go beyond gravity, so there get to be some grey areas.
Why does a person need spirituality to build self confidence? Another definition is in order here. I define spirituality very broadly. As you read articles on this site, you will see that I don't ever mean "religion" when I use the term "spirituality". Those words are not interchangeable.
The building of self-confidence isn't something that starts with willpower. The ability to build self confidence has to start with spirituality, which is a power outside of the basic human will. We're back to one of my favorite Einstein quotes: "we can't solve the situation with the same thinking that created it".
In order to change the low self confidence to high self-confidence requires an essential change. So how do we create the essential change that's required to build self confidence? What I have experienced and what I've seen with other people is that those who approach life from a spiritual basis tap into a power that allows them to do things they cannot do on their own power.
The reason a person needs spirituality to build self confidence is that spirituality allows us to tap into a power outside of our own resources or what we experience as our own resources.
So when I talk about spirituality I'm not talking about church and religion. I am talking about principles of truth, almost like applying the laws of physics to everyday life.
Recently I was given a quote that of friend shared with me and it says,
"When I don't know who I am, I serve you. When I know who I am, I am you."
The second part of that quotation is far more appealing to me. I think that life is more exciting when I know who I am. When I am you, there is no struggle or fight against anyone else's actions.
There are certainly benefits to being a confident person.
And benefits run to varying extremes. One young woman I knew couldn't ask for what she wanted in a restaurant. This caused problems for her if waiter brought her something she'd ignore she didn't order. Confidence could have helped the situation.
Another woman I know repeatedly got jobs that didn't require any of her very high mental capacity. Each new job is just as disappointing as the last. To this day she struggles trying to find satisfaction in work.
And recently, a man e-mailed me to ask for my help and yet he didn't know how I could help him.
Each of these three situations create problems not only for the person with the low self confidence before the people each person interacts with.
At the restaurant certainly the wait staff would like to their customers to be happy. And certainly people at work would like for their colleagues to be happy. It makes for better workplace. So remarkably enough if a person has low self confidence if they think they're the only ones negatively impacted they're wrong.
First ask yourself why you want to be more confident person.
As I said earlier this is an issue of willpower, or rather, learning to live by a power other than willpower. It's hard work to marshal the willpower to really be able to interact with people from a position of power if starting from a position of fear.
Try walking into a room full of powerful people when you're feeling smallish, and having to, for example, make a presentation, or make a sale. You probably won't get what you're after!
One solution that I want to focus on here is that by developing your spiritual life you will gain self-confidence. This idea runs contrary to focusing on self-confidence to gain self-confidence!
Self-confidence, having high self-confidence, having high self-esteem is the basis of many different types of what people experience as spiritual abilities: intuition, telepathy or clairvoyance. Each of these talents is based in high self-confidence and high self-esteem because after all if I don't think much of me I'm certainly not going to be able to trust in mind connection to my higher power, or Source.
There are certain actions that you can take to boost your self-esteem. Here's the secret formula to know what actions to take.
So here's the action for today that will help raise your level of confidence so that you can tap into the power that will help and your level of belief that will help raise your level of believe.
 #1 Do something for someone else and don't let them find out you did it;
 #2 Do something for someone else that they are not expecting;
 #3 Do something helpful for someone you don't know.
Fortunately I'm able to speak on this topic because I didn't always have high self-confidence. It's something I've learned and developed and have been taught over a long period of time.
These 3 points WORK.
I've copied what I've seen from other people. Some people have shared specific methods with me that I will share in the series. However, everything I will share in the series is something that I do, or something that I've done that has allowed me to be, confident person.
And while I can't promise you that at the end of week you'll have high self-confidence or high self-esteem you certainly will have access to the tools that can get to there.
I would encourage you to read the series (there are 3 parts).
E-mail me if you have questions (I'm happy to e-mail you back).
Use these tools because you will find that as a result you will be on your way to having high self-confidence.
So go ahead and try at least one of the three points that I've given you in this article. Record your progress and e-mail me your experiences.
